The Proper Haircut for Little Girls

Children try to imitate adults in many ways, especially in hairstyles. Trying to find a nice haircut to suit a child's age with a modern twist is all in your hairstylist hands and knowledge.

A good hairstylist knows how to pin point the right cut and style for the child and without making them look 10 years older. In these modern times children hairstyles and haircuts can vary from long to short, from curly to straight and in color. Though some parents may think highlighting a child's hair is fabulous, it really isn't. A child is a child and we should try to keep them that way and as innocent as we can. Color and lighteners can hurt and ruin a child's hair and possibly scare them for life...so be care full with that decision.
The little girl in the photo is my youngest grand-daughter. She had a Birthday party to go to and she wanted to wear her new Summer dress with her new sandals which she embellished her self with balloons...it was quite lovely.

These were the sandals she embellished.

She color coordinated her entire outfit for that day and she asked me if I could do something with her straight bob haircut. I was trilled to give her a new look making her feel special and pretty. She said she wanted her hair to be feathered, so with the magic of my curling iron and a bit of hair spray that was the result. The smile on her face when she saw her hair in the mirror was "PRICELESS!" She was so happy and she said to me ... "Nana I look so pretty."

Those words gave my heart a burst of love that radiated all over my body. Sometimes a little curling iron, some hot sponge rollers or a flat iron can achieve a smile in your child's face.

Styles do vary in many children but the most popular styles for your little girls are often modernized from hairstyles from past. Dorothy Hamill made the "Wedge cut" a popular style in the 80's & 90's for anyone to wear. But for some reason this cute pixie cut with a little volume of hair on the crown down to the occipital area made it special. Today this hair cut has been revamped into a slight layered version called the "Rag top" accented with volumed highlighting and chunky strips to fit these modern times.

Many of you remember Toni Tennell haircut (From the Captain & Tennell show). This round haircut, cut around the face with volume and thickness on the lower back has been modernized to the "BOB.". This revamped haircut can be worn from short to long and the most popular one is the shoulder length Bob. Either way it is a great "timeless" haircut that can be worn by our young children up to their golden years.

While choosing a nice modern look for your little girl, keep in mind some very important factors:

1. Is it easy to care for?

2. Can the child care for it herself?

3. Is it maintenance free?

4. Is it appropriate for her age?

5. And does she like it?

If these 5 questions have the yes rating by you and your hairstylist, then you have given your child a great cut. Keeping them happy is loving them unconditionally.

Next week I will post good haircuts for boys and 5 tips to achieve that great cut.

Until then Stay looking good!
