Nails...Part 1..Compositon & Structure

NAILS...THEY ARE SUCH AN AMAZING ATTRACTION...they are just one part of the beauty industry and they are an amazing fashion statement.

Nail salons across the world have become a lucrative business, transforming any nail back to its beauty within minutes. A weekly manicure at a nail salon can keep your nails looking great, clean and attractive.

The Nail is like the sun, it reflects the general health of the body. The normal healthy nail is firm, and flexible and it appears to be slightly pink in color. Its surface is smooth, curved, and unspotted, without any hollows or wavy ridges.

The nail is an appendage of the skin, its horny translucent plate protects the tips of the fingers and toes. Onyx (on'iks) is the technical term for the nail.

Nail Composition:

The nail is composed mainly of keratin (ker'ah-tin), a protein substance that forms the base of all horny tissues. The nail is whitish in appearance and it allows the pinkish color of the nail bed to be seen. The horny nail plate contains no nerves or blood vessels.

Nail Structure:

The nails consist of three parts: nail body, nail root and free edge. The nail body or plate is the visible portion of the nail that rests upon and is attached to the nail bed. The nail body extends from the root the free edge. Although the nail plate seems to be one piece, it is actually constructed in layers. The readiness with which nails split in both their length and thickness, clearly shows this form of structure.

Structures Adjoining the Nails:

The nail bed is the portion upon where the nail body rests.It is supplied with many blood vessels which provides the nourishment necessary for the continued growth of the nail. The nail bed is abundantly supplied with nerves.

The Matrix is the part of the nail bed that extends beneath the nail root and contains nerves, lymph and blood vessels. The matrix produces the nail and its cells undergo a reproducing and hardening process. The matrix will continue to grow as long as it receives nutrition and remains in a healthy condition.

The Lunula or half moon, is located at the base of the nail. The area underneath the lunula is the matrix. The light color of the lunula may be due to the reflection of light where the matrix and the connective tissue of the nail bed join.

The new ad campaign for  T by Alexander Wang featuring Zoe Kravitz caught my eye right away.  Her earthy yet rocker- girl style pair perfectly with these comfy, slouchy clothes. I'm really feeling the classic boatneck dress. What do you think of this ad series? Those of you who live in NYC have you been seeing them everywhere?

griffith observatory

It's kind of crazy that before yesterday, I've lived in LA nearly my whole life and have never been to the Griffith Observatory.  Matt and I decided to check it out around 6:30pm to catch the sunset.  Since the parking lot was full, we had to park at the bottom and do a bit of a hike to get to the top of the hill but the view was totally worth it.  There's also a huge telescope you can look at to see the moon up close which isn't something you get to do everyday.  After all the walking, we got some dinner at Alcove Cafe in Los Feliz... a bit crowded but the onion rings are to die for!
